THREE’S FIRST STRIKE!

LA Times, NY Times, CNN, all Bay Area news stations, 1000 protestors
surround campus. UCOP picketers march daily down Broadway. On Wednesday the
28th, hundreds converge in front of UCOP’s Franklin Building and
dance in the street to R-E-S-P-E-C-T.

bargaining, but Unfair Labor Practices Continue.

Clericals
and Lecturers strike Davis, Santa Barbara, Santa Cruz, and Riverside. Santa
Barbara CUEsters strike for a third day, and Irvine lecturers also strike.

Berkeley/UCOP
members vote to approve second strike, pending advisory membership meeting.
Many members insist that future strike efforts must be statewide.

The Public
Employment Relations Board issues a complaint against UC for bad-faith
bargaining, and then denies UC’s request for an impasse to be declared in
negotiations.

CUE and UC
enter voluntary mediation.
Berkeley/UCOP
members visit area legislators.

|
CUE and UC
reach a tentative contract agreement through mediation. Members ratify
contract #2 by a ratio of 2 to 1.

Supreme Court rules in favor of CUE and other parties in a historic lawsuit
against the UC Regents. UC had failed to disclose minutes of an investment
committee meeting regarding important changes in the way investments were
made.

|
Negotiations
begin on a full contract between CUE and UC, as re-opener negotiations
continue and eventually move into the impasse process.

November 2004
|
The UC
Union Coalition announces that it has prevented UC from increasing health
care costs for calendar year 2005.

December 2004
|
Clericals
are the only employees at UC not to receive two paid “bonus days” during
holiday closure, since UC had insisted that CUE forfeit any raises for
Fiscal year ‘03-04 as a condition of receiving the days. After initially
challenging this, other unions end up accepting the bonus days.

February 17, 2005
|
As part of
the impasse process for the re-opener negotiations, the Fact Finding report
is issued. Neutral Arbitrator Gerald McKay sides with CUE and rules that UC
can well afford raises for clerical staff! The story hits the front page of
the SF Chronicle the next day.

April 14, 2005
|
AFSCME,
the service workers union, stages a one- day strike across the state. CUE
sends UC an official notice that it will strike in sympathy. At Berkeley,
hundreds participate, including a number of CUE Members.

May 26, 2005
|
UPTE
stages another one-day strike across the state. CUE again participates.
|
June 13-15, 2005
|
In
response to the fact finding report, CUE strikes for 3 days across the
state. In northern California, the strike culminates in a large rally in
front of the UC headquarters.

November 13, 2005
|
SF
Chronicle launches its UC Compensation series, drawing significant public
attention to executive excess. (The series consists of more than 40
articles to date.

December 2005
|
CUE &
UC reach a tentative agreement for a full contract.

February 15, 2006
|
The new
contract is ratified. Among other features, it provides the following Cost
of Living increases, and also provides special increases for library
assistants.

Protest
for “transit justice” at UC Berkeley draws over 60 people, including members
of CUE, AFSCME, UPTE, and city leaders. Workers occupy the hallway in front
of Vice Chancellor Coley’s office in University Hall for about 15 minutes,
chanting “Spare the air, Spare the air, carpool fee hikes are unfair!”
